Abstract

The number and distribution of spotted hyaenas in the Savuti region of the Chobe National Park was calculated by individual recognition of animals. The hyaenas at Savuti existed at moderate population density. Clan size and territory size were much larger than their equivalents in South African game reserves where the density of hyaenas was similar. This was thought to be due to the migratory behaviour of several species of prey animals and the sparse distribution of dry season water at Savuti. Under conditions of drought, the hyaenas ranged into neighbouring territories to seek water but returned to their territories to hunt.
