The Gaborone dam wall was raised 8 m in 1984-1986 and the reservoir serves as the main water supply for the city of Gaborone, Botswana. At various depths in the reservoir the water temperatures were measured from late 1986 to 1988. The temperatures ranged from 11C to 27C during the year with an average of 19C while differences between upper layers and the bottom layers of the lake remained below 3. The daily fluctuations in temperature at the surface were about 2C. During the measurements the level of the lake increased from 12 m in 1987 to 18 m in 1988; by March 1988 the newly constructed spillway overflowed. The water is in considerable movement and the temperature gradient is low. This paper presents the results of the monthly measurements of the temperature of the water in the reservoir.
