Abstract

The Botswana Society held a Symposium on the subject of Culture in Botswana during the period 28th September - 2nd October 1987 to coincide with the 21st Anniversary of Independence Celebrations. The Symposium was opened by Hon. D. Kwelagobe, Minister for Agriculture. In all, 19 papers were delivered, two panel discussions held and one evening slide show on changing culture presented. Each paper was discussed by all attending the Symposium and there was a Final Session at which a number of recommendations were put forward. The Proceedings, including a synopsis of all discussions and panel debates, were recorded, and then edited. The standard of contributions varied very widely, some of them relating to general rather than Botswana Culture; it proved impossible to produce Proceedings suitable for publication in one volume. Thus a copy of the full Proceedings has been placed in the National Archives where it is available for those interested in its study. After some discussion the Committee decided against general publication of the Proceedings, but rather to publish a summary in Botswana Notes & Records. It is this Summary, with the Opening Address and list of Recommendations which is published here.
