Abstract

Surface features (mounds and soil-sheeting) built by termites were surveyed in rangeland, fallow and arable plots at five sites in south-east Botswana. Densities and distributions of features varied with site and land use. Termites recorded in sample plots were Macrotermes michaelseni (Sjostedt), Odontotermes latericius (Haviland), Odontotermes badius (Haviland), Cubitermes transvaalensis (Fuller), Trineroitermes rhodesiensis (Sjostedt), Allodontotermes rhodesiensis (Sjostedt), Microcerotermes parous (Haviland), Fulleritermes comoni (Sands) and Microtermes sp. The role and the potential benefits of termites in semi arid agroecosystems are discussed.
