Abstract

Occurrences of lightning and thunder have been recorded over two complete rainy seasons, 1991-92 and 1992-93, at 23 stations around Botswana. The estimated keraunic levels, or number of thunder-days per annum, show that the incidence of lightning strikes to ground varies from about 3 km-2 yr-1 in the Central and Kgalagadi Districts to about 8 km-2 yr-1 in the far-north. This paper presents the very first isokeraunic map of Botswana showing the geographical distribution of lightning activity in the country.
