Abstract

Phane (lmbrasia belina) originating from 12 localities in Botswana was investigated for the presence of moulds and aflatoxins. The fungi which were most commonly associated with phane belong to the genus Aspergillus (47% of the fungal isolates). Aflatoxins were found in phane obtained from 7 of the 12 localities at various concentrations. Phane from 5 localities bad aflatoxin concentrations exceeding the 20 g/kg which is considered as the maximum tolerable amount by most countries. With proper processing, handling, drying and storage, such infestation could be reduced and aflatoxin production minimised.
