Abstract

The interannual variation of rainfall and maximum temperature in Botswana are partially explained by the southern oscillation since the keeping of records, but more so during the last decades. There is a clear seasonal variation in the strength of this relationship with peaks during the mid and late summer. From the limited data records which are available it seems that the southern oscillation signal cannot be used to forecast maize and sorghum yields in the country.
