Abstract

This short paper is based on my wife and my involvement in the movement of South African refugees through Serowe, in what is now Botswana, following the Sharpeville Massacre on 21 March 1960. In a letter dated 18 March 1959, written a few weeks before his death, Tshekedi Khama wrote to me about the proposal to appoint ""a manager for the Bamangwato Tribal Cattle Development Centre"". His letter of 29 June, 1959 offered me ""a two year contract...."" In early September we sailed from Southampton to Cape Town to ""work with an African Tribe"".
