Abstract

Botswana has undergone dramatic economic development since independence. The Okavango Delta peoples are experiencing intense change as a result of economic development. The current study is providing important information regarding the traditional lifeways of these peoples and how they are impacted by economic development, especially in the form of nature tourism. Children's levels of skills for traditional activities and their level of traditional knowledge of their environment are explored using a theoretical perspective derived from both economics and behavioral ecology. The results show that cultural change can happen with great speed in response to changes in subsistence economy, parental aspirations, and alterations in the patterns of children's socialization and training.
