Abstract

The purpose of a name is to act as an easy means of reference. The use of a name avoids the use of a descriptionptive phrase every time we wish to refer to an object or group of objects. Scientific names of plants are all in Latin. All other names are referred to as vernacular names. Setswana names for plants are therefore of this category. The use of both Latin names and vernacular ones when studying local flora enhances the understanding and eases the identification of the plants. Some Setswana plant names have a ""meaning"", while some do not.
