Abstract

Botswana's relations with the People's Republic of China reflect the wider political and economic changes that both Asia and southern Africa have undergone in the past decades. From political linkages forged around opposition to the regional hegemony of apartheid South Africa, contemporary ties revolve mainly around economic interaction and investment. Ideological and political ingredients, so prevalent in the 1970s, are largely absent as China, like Botswana, has embraced market capitalism with considerable enthusiasm.
