Abstract

It is often argued that there is no reading culture in Botswana and that Botswana is basically an oral society. Her history and culture, are mostly passed on through word of mouth. There is however a growing amount of Botswana literature being produced by individuals and institutions. These documents are being collected by various libraries and information institutions. This activity is part of bibliographic control, a library term that means the collection, preservation for posterity and making available for use of a society's published output. The responsibility for collecting Botswana's documented heritage lies mainly with the Department of National Library Service.
