Abstract

HIV/AIDS is a pandemic. AIDS is the final stage of infection with HIV.The long latency period, which can be between five and ten years, has facilitated the spread of the virus. During the latency period, most individuals are not aware that they are infected. The rates for both new infections and deaths continues to increase. Since the mid-1980s, through the mode of heterosexual transmission, HIV has been spreading invisibly but rapidly through the population. Botswana is believed to have one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in the world, and the rapid spread of the virus has many causes.
