Abstract

As a historian one does not associate the State of Botswana with the Catholic Church. One gets the impression of the dominance of the London Missionary Society, Moffat, MacKenzie, and others. However, the present borders of the modem state include the remains of the earliest mission station of Jesuit provinces which today continue in Zambia and Zimbabwe. The residences of 'Good Hope' and 'Immaculate Heart of Mary' lie forgotten at the colonial settlement of Old Tati in north-east Botswana. Here we will take a brieflook at the history of the so called Zambezi Mission which took the Jesuits into Central Africa, while we will also consider the little we know about the Tati Mission Station.
