Abstract

According to United Nations projections, by 2025 a fairly sizable proportion of the population in some African countries will not have sufficient water to meet their basic needs.Southern African rivers and other water-related ecosystems are seen by both ecologists and governments as being in declining ecological health. The reasons for this situation include high demand on the water systems, pollution from a variety of sources, heavy extraction for irrigation and mining in some areas, and the lack of sustainable water use. It is crucial that efforts be made to maintain as much as possible the natural flow of these water systems.
