Abstract

Aerosol concentrations in urban environments are dominated by motor vehicle emissions. Measurements were carried out near a busy main road in Gaborone, Botswana, using a portable laser scattering particle counter with a minimum detectable size of O.3m. Aerosol concentrations were determined as a function of distance from the traffic and wind speed. The concentration fell by a factor of four at a distance of 70m on the leeward side of the road and increased by a factor of two for every increase in wind speed of 3ms-1. At a wind speed of 2ms-1, the windward side of the road was hardly affected by pollution from vehicles.
