Abstract

In comparison with other tribal capitals in Botswana, such as Molepolole, Mochudi, Kanye and Maun, Serowe has a particularly colourful past, especially during the colonial period. In terms of national and international attention, Serowe simply had no rival in Botswana. Since the capital of colonial Botswana (then the Bechuanaland Protectorate) was in Mafikeng in South Africa, some white South Africa newspapers referred to Serowe as the ""capital"" of Bechuanaland.
