Abstract

""Poverty amidst plenty"" is an often-used phrase to descriptionbe the present state of development in Botswana. The phrase indicates that the very impressive economic growth during the last twenty years has not yet reached all social groups. Uneven development. as exhibited by rising unemployment, persistent poverty and profound income inequalities, is still a serious problem in Botswana. The rural areas and the rural households are among the most disadvantaged in this, in the African context, rich countly. In the view of this unequal development, this paper presents the livelihood strategies of rural households in Botswana, and discusses the reasons for households to adopt a specific livelihood strategy.
