Abstract

The Okavango Delta in northern Botswana contains the largest fishery in Botswana. Modem fishing gear introduced in the early 1980s through government grants such as the Financial Assistance Policy (FAP) has facilitated the emergence of commercial fishery, especially in villages such as Shakawe, which is situated in the panhandle of the Okavango Delta. The aim of this study was to determine the financial and economic profitability of one exemplary government-granted (FAP) commercial fishery project in Shakawe. This area was chosen because it is the largest fishing area that contributes more than 90% of the nation's fish production.
