Abstract

James Bisdee Hellier arrived at the Cape on 2 November 1864 accompanied by his wife and four children and began farming in the Queenstown district. He was both an agriculturalist and a businessman, having started his career gaining knowledge of all facets of farming in England, after which he entered business in Bristol, manufacturing oil-cake, artificial fertilizer and dye-stuffs.
