Abstract

Why is it important to know about him as a doctor? He may have provided the answer to this himself. In an essay the Westminister Review published in 1907, he said of John Keats, who had also been a medical student at Guy's: "His experience at Guy's strengthened his human sympathy, enlarged his conception of suffering, and broadened his purview, but it was after all a mere accessory, not an essential factor, in his mental development." How this was also to a great extent, true for Leipoldt, becomes evident when one traces his career.
