Whenever and wherever new settlements are established, a supply of water is essential. Hence, Van Riebeeck's choice of the Liesbeek as a nucleus for expansion. As the settlement grew, keeping the river clean became a priority, especially as residents in Rondebosch and neighbouring areas were wholly dependent on the river and wells for water for domestic use and drinking.
