In the 5th Century B.C. the tribes of the Celtic Gauls invaded north western Italy, occupying half of today's Piedmont ( meaning at the foot of the mountains) region. They passed through the Canavese region into the Po Valley, as far as the Bolognese territory. One of the tribes, who were poor peasants, namely the Salassi, settled in the Canavese region. They venerated rural gods, such as Epona the goddess of animals, as referred to by Pliny in his 18th book of history.
