Abstract

In 1921 as a nine-year old English-speaking child I was introduced to a totally alien environment of an Afrikaner-owned farm in the Karoo. A severe bout of flu suffered by our family of four had deemed that the remainder of the winter be spent away from the Cape peninsula. The venue was Klipdrift, an ostrich farm at Zebra some 12 miles from Oudtshoorn.
