Abstract

Margaret Cairns (née Jones) was born on 26 April 1912 in the house, named "Edrom" in Rondebosch, where she, in her 96th year still lives. She attended Springfield Convent School in Wynberg, Cape, followed by study at the University of Cape Town (UCT), from which she graduated BA LLB in 1935. While still a student she met her husband-to-be, John Howie Cairns, a medical student. Although called to the Bar of the Cape Supreme Court in 1936, an honour then shared by a very small number of South African women, Margaret chose not to accept because she was about to marry John on 21 December of the same year.
