Abstract

Up to 1853, the [Roman] Catholics in the Cape peninsula had one church available in which to attend Sunday Mass, St Mary's Cape Town, the Cathedral of today. In that year, Bishop Raymond Griffiths, who was in charge of the Catholic Church at the Cape, leased a cottage in St Andrew's Road, Rondebosch, on the site of the present Dutch Reformed Church where he installed his brother, Fr Joseph Griffiths, as priest of the Rondebosch Mission. Here he lived and Mass was said while a permanent church was under construction.
