William Porter, attorney general of the Cape from 1839 to 1859, left a mass of valuable papers. These have fairly recently formed the basis of two impressive publications on his life and works. Among the documents which the South African Library has in its keeping is a personal diary covering the months June to November after his arrival from Ireland. This journal provides a fascinating picture of his social life and the persons he met during that short initial period.
