Abstract

Captain James Cook visited Cape Town four times between 1771 and 1776. The objectives of this article are to provide the background to such visits and to consider how the Cape appeared, firstly, to him - probably the foremost explorer in the world - and, secondly, to those who accompanied him. Cook's use of the Cape's victualling and ship-repair facilities - and hence his very presence here - has been somewhat neglected recently by local researchers.
