Abstract

The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Foundation instituted the 'Choosing Wisely' campaign in 2011 following a challenge issued by Howard Brody. He challenged professional medical organisations in the USA to compile a 'Top Five' list for their specialty. This list should consist of five diagnostic tests or treatments that are very commonly ordered by members of that specialty, are very expensive and have been shown not to provide any meaningful benefit to patients. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) compiled a Top Five list; I have borrowed from their list and added my own suggestions for an ALLSA Top Five list. I also discuss the role that ALLSA has played and could continue to play in promoting good and ethical allergy practice in South Africa.
