Abstract

I am a general practitioner practicing in a small town and a few months ago, I was approached by a contract research organisation (CRO) to participate in a clinical trial of an asthma drug. For each patient I enrolled in the trial, I was offered a sum of money. The representative, who recruited me, assured me that the trial had received the necessary approvals, including one from an Ethics Review committee. I had never participated in a clinical research trial before and was happy to receive the extra money. I joined the trial immediately. Last week I was informed that I was not keeping to my side of the bargain and was not enrolling patients fast enough and was told to dispense with the formal informed consent process. I am now concerned that I did not initially enquire about the scientific or ethical aspects of the study. Should I withdraw from the trial?
