Abstract

The first gift I received from a patient was when I was an intern - not because I was a particularly impressive doctor but because I was attentive to her and spent time talking to her. Subsequently I received small gifts as tokens of appreciation from patients and their families, and accepted them with what I hope was good grace. Interestingly enough, patients for whom I felt I had done the least were the most grateful, and families who had lost close family members tended to be the most thankful. Now I am a paediatrician in an allergy clinic at a large public hospital, and my patients often bring me gifts at Christmas time.
