Abstract

I was privileged to complete my sub-specialist training in Paediatric Allergy under the tutorship of Professors Eugene Weinberg, Cassim Motala and Paul Potter. These three mentors were directly responsible for initiating my research interest in the niche of food allergy. Peanut Allergy (PA) was then, in the year 2000, an exceptionally rare diagnosis among black South African children (even in a Tertiary Hospital Setting). Intriguingly however, the rates of PA were noted to be higher among mixed-race South African (SA) children and higher yet among Caucasian SA children.
