A case study is presented of an 11-year old boy with severe chronic allergic rhinitis. The patient had been poorly treated for many years and was now severely impaired in terms of quality of life. He was sleeping poorly and his school work was suffering. He was not interested in sporting activities. Once his condition was correctly diagnosed and managed, his life changed dramatically. He is now successful at school andon the sports field. Allergic rhinitis is not a trivial condition. It impacts quality of life through poor sleep and has enormous implications on learning. The National Department of Education has published draft legislation, referred to as the SIAS (Screening, Identification, Assessment and Support) document, to support pupils with barriers to learning in main-stream education. Allergic conditions are important barriers in this regard and require attention.
