Abstract

Component resolved diagnostics (CRD) is a relatively new concept in the investigation of the allergic patient. Measurement of component specific-IgE (sIgE) allows for the identification of the allergen component within the allergen source, which may add valuable information to the management of the patient. The use of allergen component sIgE tests and the interpretation thereof requires some degree of knowledge about the basis of the different protein families and their properties. This feature will provide a basic overview of allergen components, component nomenclature, species specific versus cross-reacting components, stability of components, and clinical associations of each component.
