Extracted from text ... New approaches to stroke prevention supported by PROGRESS Stroke is a major public health challenge. It is thought to be responsible for almost 10% of all deaths globally, and for around 30% of all deaths which arise from cardiovascular disorders. Moreover, two-thirds of this toll occurs in the developing world. Although hypertension is perhaps the most important - and modifiable - risk factor for stroke, normotensive subjects are by no means immune.
