Abstract

This paper deals with certain materials problems which arose during the construction of a section of gravel road traversing uninhabited, sand covered terrain in the Okavango Territory of South West Africa. The environmental conditions pertaining in the area are descriptionbed in some detail. A knowledge of these is essential to an appreciation of the situation which developed and of the methods employed in arriving at a satisfactory solution. These methods involved the use of both aerial photographic interpretation and aerial reconnaissance. As far as is known, the technique adopted for the aerial reconnaissance has not previously been used. Finally, the applicability of the techniques employed and their superiority over the more conventional methods initially used, are discussed.
