Abstract

This paper descriptionbes the development, design and construction of the underground skating rink structure of Sterland, Pretoria. The structure consists of a series of radially placed portal frames which is built in reinforced- and prestressed concrete. The structure serves as roof to the skating rink which is thirty feet below ground level. The structure also carries on top of it a two- and three storey building which is part of the rest of the building complex. The construction procedure of the structure was unorthodox as the whole structure, as well as the building which is standing on it, were initially built on the surface of the ground and later lifted off the ground by post-tensioning the structure. Only after the completion of the stressing operations was the excavation for the skating rink underneath started and completed.
