Tests are descriptionbed in which the live load on a temporary stand for spectators was measured during and after a major rugby football match. The greatest live load intensity recorded was 4,4 kPa (91 Ibf/ft2) on the gangway near to an exit from the seating area. This load intensity included a dynamic component of about 8 per cent. The maximum load intensity recorded underneath the seating area was 3,3 kPa (70 Ibf/ft2) including a dynamic component of about 5 per cent. The live load thus did not exceed the distributed load intensity of 4,8 kPa (100 Ibf/ft2) specified in the Standard Building Regulations as the minimum that such structures should be designed to support. Attention is, however, drawn to the possibility that the requirements of the Standard Building Regulations may not be sufficient for loads that might occur under abnormal conditions.
In the paper the causes and effects of shore erosion were discussed, measures to restore eroded beaches and to combat shore regression were given and the severe shore erosion at Deal Party, Port Elizabeth, was descriptionbed in some detail.
