Abstract

Selection criteria have been reviewed in relation to the results of pore size determination by direct and indirect methods. The range of materials which could be selected by a combination of extreme criteria with extreme pore sizes has been demonstrated as being too large to justify, without further investigation, the selection of geofabrics for critical applications. A method based on direct comparison of the pores of a geofabric with those of a granular filter selected by conventional criteria, has been proposed. The current method of interpretation of reverse sieving results has been shown to be fundamentally incorrect.
