Abstract

A theoretical investigation is carried out into the buckling loads of segmental columns. These are defined aa columns made up of a number of rectangular segments: the segments comprise two different sizes (ie different lengths and flexural rigidities) and are arranged alternately along the column length. The battened column is a practical example of this form. The analysis considers the effect on the buckling load of variations in the number of segments, the ratio of segmentel flexural rigidities and the ratio of segmentel lengths.
