Abstract

Unemployed people and emerging contractors were used on a project to reduce uncontrolled water flows in this overcrowded township Uncontrolled flows of water used to occur virtually everywhere in Alexandra township north of Johannesburg. It was most noticeable in the streets, where water from various sources flowed into the nearest kerb inlet to the stormwater system, threatening the road system, while ultimately ending up in the Jukskei River. This posed a serious pollution problem to both Alexandra and the river. The flows were mostly the result of blocked and overflowing sewers, spilled water at standpipes, and discarded water in the shack areas.
