Abstract

Slope stability theory is reviewed with particular regard in its application to the high and steep slopes of opencast mines. A theory based upon stresses along the surface of potential failure is proposed and this allows account to be taken of external loadings applied to the slope, e.g. the effects of interference with regional stresses in the earth's crust.
