Abstract

The application of iterative methods to the solution of finite element equilibrium equations is investigated. The familiar Gauss-Seidel procedure is shown to be suitable for axially-loaded structures but convergence problems may occur in beam analysis. The effect of a supplementary group relaxation technique on the convergence rate is investigated. It is shown that the technique produces a marked irnprovement in convergence and permits an early termination of the iterative process.

Die aanwending van iteratiewe rnetodes vir die oplossing van eindige elemente ewewigsvergelykings is ondersoek. Die welbekende Gauss-Seidel prosedure het geskik geblyk vir aksiaal-belaste strukture maar konvergensie probleme mag ontstaan in balk-ontledings. Die gevolge van 'n aanvullende groepontladingstegniek is voorts bestudeer. Daar word aangetoon dat hierdie tegniek 'n aansienlike verbetering in die konvergensie te weeg bring en dus 'n vroeë beëindiging van die iteratiewe proses toelaat.
