Abstract

The investigation and design studies for the underground works of the Drakensberg Pumped Storage Scheme are described. The relatively weak, sedimentary rock types and the limited precedent called for relatively extensive exploratory studies including full-scale trial prototypes of the machine hall and pressure tunnels. The caverns forming the power station complex were excavated in carefully controlled stages and are permanently supported by rock reinforcement together with shotcrete linings.
