Abstract

The prediction of the elastic modulus of concrete for design is complicated by the variety of factors affecting this parameter. The influences of aggregate stiffness and concrete strength are incorporated in a new design approach which is being included in the new BS 0000 (originally CP 110). The application of this approach to South African conditions is discussed with specific reference to local aggregates and cements. Aggregates have been grouped according to their elastic properties so that designers can make better estimates of concrete modulus than might have previously been possible. The ideal approach to elastic modulus prediction by means of the concept of two-phase models is also introduced.

Die voorspelling van die elastisiteitsmodulus van beton vir ontwerp word deur die verskeidenheid faktore wat hierdie parameter beÏnvloed bemoeilik. Die invloede van aggregaatstyfheid en betonsterkte word in 'n nuwe ontwerpbenade- ring, wat in die nuwe BS 0000 (oorspronklik CP 110) ingesluit is, geÏnkorporeer. Die toepassing van hierdie benadering op Suid-Afrikaanse omstandighede is met spesifieke verwysing na plaaslike aggregate en sement bespreek. Aggregate is volgens hulle elastiese eienskappe gegroepeer sodat ontwerpers 'n beter raming van betonmodulus kan maak as wat voorheen rnoontlik was. Die ideale benadering tot elastisiteitsmodulusvoorspelling deur middel van die begrip van twee-fase modelle word ook bekendgestel.
