The development of finite element techniques for inelastic stability analysis of frame structures is addressed. This includes the formulation of beam / frame elements with a layered representation of the cross-section, the use of elastic-plastic constitutive models and the incorporation of a simplified updated Legrangian large deformation algorithm.

Extensive numerical experimentation is reported from which guidelines for efficient modelling are derived. Satisfactory comparisons between the present analyses and previously published solutions are achieved.
