Abstract

Variation of contract quantities can easily lead to claims and even to litigation. This paper presents the results of a study to evaluate the extent of the variation in quantities of a number of highway contracts during the period 1977-1986. Accuracy of measurement was judged by considering the variation in the total contract sum subsequent to tendering. Variations in individual items, as reflected in trends and percentage changes, were also compared by relating them to the monetary value of the respective items.

It is proposed that the construction industry use the objectives matrix evaluation procedure presented to monitor variations in contract quantities for management purposes. Thereby the evaluation parameters of the objectives matrix could be developed into a useful reference framework through the input of knowledgeable persons from industry. It could also be tested and possibly used by other sectors of the industry.
