Abstract

Rubble masonry concrete (RMC) dam construction is likely to become increasingly prevalent in South Africa, particularly in view of our current need for job creation and skills development. In light of the fact that design technology has to date been developed largely on empirical grounds and construction has included some fairly ambitious structural configurations, a need is perceived for a more analytical approach to RMC dam design. This paper discusses appropriate design methodologies for RMC arch dams, on the basis of previous design and construction practices and in relation to experience gained on recent structures designed and constructed in South Africa.
