Abstract

A thorough understanding of the stochastic nature of streamflow, water availability and its utilization is essential for the formulation of effective water resource development and management strategies. The Olifants River basin study has, inter alia, been successful in modelling the hydrology and investigating the risk yield relationship for large dams in the basin. This overview of just one aspect of the study, the surface water resources, serves to highlight the information necessary for integrated basin management.
