Abstract

The soft nature of the mountain waters associated with the Lesotho Highlands water project has prompted renewed interest in the effects of soft water on concrete. Soft water in contact with concrete leaches calcium hydroxide from the hardened cement paste matrix, resulting in strength loss of the material.


This paper reviews some of the literature on the deterioration effects of soft water on concrete mainly with a view to establishing a means of characterizing the relative resistance of different concretes to soft water attack. Some emphasis is placed on the performance of concretes made with fly ash or ground granulated blastfurnace slag as cement extenders. The results of pilot laboratory study into the effects of soft water on concretes made with South African cements and cement extenders are also presented and discussed. These results show mainly that the addition of cement extenders improves the resistance of concrete to deterioration by soft water.

Die sagte aard van die hooglandwaters wat met die Lesotho Hooglandwaterskema geassosieer is, het hernieude belangstelling gewek in die effek van sagte water op beton. Sagte water in kontak met beton loog kalsiumhidroksied uit die verharde sementfase, met die gevolg dat die sterkte van die beton afneem.


Hierdie referaat hersien die beskikbare literatuur met betrekking tot verwordingseffekte van sagte water op beton, ten einde 'n metode daar te stel waarvolgens relatiewe weerstand van verskillende betonmengsels teen sagte water gekarakteriseer kan word. Klem word gele op die gedrag van beton wat gemaak is met vliegas of gemaalde verkorrelde hoogoondslak as sementaanvullers. Die resultate van die laboratoriumloodsstudie (klikprojek) oor die effekte van sagte water op betonmengsels gemaak met Suid-Afrikaanse sement en sementaanvullers word ook voorgele en bespreek. Hierdie resultate toon hoofsaaklik dat die byvoeging van sementaanvullers die weerstand van beton teen verwording deur sagte water verbeter.
